India capitulate at Mumbai to English attack

India lost 7 wickets in 96 balls after lunch to collapse to a 213 run defeat to Flintoff's men. India chasing 295 for victory on the final day lost early wickets which brought Dravid and Sachin to the wicket. Indian hopes harboured with the 2 men who are indisputably India's finest batsmen to save the test or even to launch an assault. Hard did they try but Flintoff's persistence paid off with Rahul Dravid getting an outside edge. When Sachin got one turning from Shaun Udal and played into Ian Bell's hands, the Indian collapse was inevitable. But the way in which the collapse happened was appaling with the Indians falling like nine pins without any sign of resistance. Dhoni in particular can never be forgiven for the shot he played back to back against Udal and it defies any kind of explanation.

From England's point of view this test marked the return of James Anderson who burst into the scene 3 years back by taking the fastest 50 wickets and went into exile. He bowled with brisk pace and took key wickets in the match. Flintoff has become a colossal figure in this English side and was rightly awarded the Man of the Match and Man of the Series. He has captained this young side to a famous victory and has become a great leader.

Amazing Arsenal blow away the Italian machine

What a Night!!!!!!!!!!! Arsenal beating Juventus 2-0 at Highbury and more surprising was that Juve did not have a single shot on goal nor did threaten Lehmann. Patrick Vieira's return to his former club ended in sheer dissapointment for Fabio Capello's men who were trully outplayed by the Gunners. The sheer wight of Juventus was against this young Arsenal side, with players like Trezeguet, Ibrahimovic, Camoneresi, Vieira, Buffon, Cannavaro, Thuram, Emerson all true greats of the modern game but the Gunners put up an emphatic display of football. It was even until the first 30 minutes but once Arsenal started passing the ball with more pace and zest the Italian side started to break. The first goal would be the classic headline of many a newspaper tommorow morning " Vieira robbed of the ball and his successor Fabregas scored the Opener to leave Buffon rooted". Patrick was stopped in his stride by a brilliant tackle by fellow frenchman Pires and the ball was played to Thierry who found Fabregas in front of the goal and the young Catalan put the Gunners ahead in Style. Arsenal should have gone ahead by 2 goals in the next 3-4 minutes. After the break it was Arsenal all the way attacking with vigour, the one touch passing of the Gunners proving to be too much for the Italians. A great ball by Hleb opened up Fabregas and Henry provided the finishing touches to this great game. Juventus did themselves no favours by indulging in rash tackles with Zebina and Camorenesi red carded while Vieira yellow carded and would miss the return leg. This certainly plays heavily into the North London side for the return leg.

Wenger has justified himself by entrusting the midfield to Fabregas who has played some amazing football in the past 3 months and especially in the Champions League. This Arsenal side has surely struck form and its heartening to see the way they are gelling together. Barring any unexpected incidents Arsenal should go through to the first SemiFinal in the Champions league.

Chinese Wireless Revolution

The growing trend in the rapidly developing countries is the leapfrog in technological shift and acceptance. Western Europe and America had to go through a phase of laying cables, setting up telephone lines and made it available in the nook and corner of their nation states. This actually cost so much to these governments and when the phase of upgrading came it takes so much effort and money to change an already up and running system. The wireless technology is the latest addition and it has put the existing telephone lines to fall out of favour but still is not as efficient as the convention mode of communication. Whereas Countries like China and India who do not have the resources to lay cable lines and set up telephone systems are actually jumping into the wireless stream. The latest news is that China mobile is the world's largest cell phone operator, this was unimaginable a decade ago with 900 million chinese living in rural areas. This shift in technology has allowed the developing to bridge the gap with the developed. The intangible cultural shifts which these technological leaps will create is hard to understand. Whereas the developed countries go through a step by step process of advancement, the developing leap right into it which will create a bigger generation gap in the knowledge of these gadgets and also in the operating nature of the people.

Gerrard's mistake gifts a deserved Arsenal Win

Arsenal's young team are combining really well and this weekend they were up against Liverpool at Highbury. The team that withstood Real Madrid's attack during the midweek had one change with Adebayour coming for Reyes who was injured. Arsenal's injury woes continued with Ljunberg worsening his injury and had to be taken off at 12 minutes and was replaced by Pires. Arsenal started impressively having a couple of good chances in the first 20 minutes. Liverpool consolidated and attacked when Eboue stole the ball from Luis Garcia and passed it to Hleb. Within seconds of the Liverpool attack, Fabregas was having the ball at his feet and passed the ball to Henry bisecting 2 defenders. Henry did the rest opening up his body and lashed a curler past reina. Classical start by the Gunners and they were imposing themselves on the game and beginning to create chances with Eboue and Hleb combining well. Henry missed a couple of chances after good attacking play and Eboue missed another chance. Just when the match appeared to end in a draw, Gerrard struck a powerfull swerving shot which was parried by Lehmann only for Luis Garcia to follow up and score. Second time in this season has Luis Garcia followed up a parried shot to score against Arsenal. The Gunners were stunned coz Fabregas was fouled before Gerrard got the ball from Alonso. Gunners summoned all their strength to get a winner after missing many chances but the Liverpool defence held firm until Steven Gerrard of all players backpassed to the Goalkeeper only for Henry to intercept and score. Gunners had some more chances to finish it off in style but missed them, this time it was Robert Pires striking the post.

Arsenal will have to improve its finishing in order to win close matches but can take heart from perfomances by Hleb, Eboue, Fabregas, Flamini. Gilberto had a good game and so was Lehmann except for one mistake. Thierry Henry once again has proved he is indispensible for Arsenal. Pires will have to step up his game if he wants to go to Germany.

Gunners drawn against Juventus

Arsenal have been drawn against Serie A leaders Juventus in a mouth watering UEFA CL Quarter final clash setting up the return of former Highbury legend and captain Patrick Vieira to face the North London crowd and his former teammates. Arsenal stunned the world with their victory over Real Madrid with some claiming the second leg to be one of the best 0-0 draw ever, now face Faio Capello's outfit in the first leg at home followed by a trip to Torino. Despite their ragged performance back home in the premiership Arsenal have been brilliant in the Champions league with 6 wins and 2 draws, all set to beat the clean sheet record of AC Milan set last year. They have scored every time when they have left Highbury and won each one of them. Juventus have been brittle in the Champions league though they are nothing short of magnificient in the Serie A this season, but Arsenal would have to adapt their game to the stylish Italian outfit. Well if they could beat Real Madrid and its galacticos they are surely in with a big shout in this. With Van Persie coming back from injury and a chance of Cole coming back, the Gunners are striking form at the right moment after a dissapointing season.

Gunners go past the Galacticos on a Historic Night

History had to be created when Arsenal and Real Madrid, two of europe's heavyweights play for the first time since 1962. After the fabulous Henry goal at the Bernebeau could Madrid bring on a punch against the young gooners and shatter their defences, could Beckham win on home soil after leaving 3 years ago. Attack they did, Real with Ronaldo,Zidane, Raul brought on their heavy artillery from the Spanish mainland but the young gunners held their ground firm at Highbury. With both the teams having good chances to go ahead, Reyes missed for Arsenal while Raul missed for the Galacticos, Henry almost scored just denied by an agile Casillas. Arsenal held through some real tense moments at the end as Real brought all their 11 players upfront. Pires had the empty goal at his mercy from 70 yards out and it was stopped on the line by Roberto Carlos. Thats how it ended even-stevens on an exciting night with the scoreline hardly suggesting the thrills and spills of the game. Now Arsenal are the only British club to be left in the competetion with Chelsea and Liverpool knocked out. No one gave the Gunners any kind of realistic hope when they were drawn against the giants from spain but they proved everyone wrong. Slowly but surely this team is gelling together well with Gilberto and Fabregas at the heart of the midfield engine, Hleb,Reyes and Freddie on the flanks and offering attacking options, Henry as regal as ever, Van Persie provides the attacking instincts at every opportunity. Young prospects like Eboue, Diaby, Flamini, Walcott waiting on the wings, Toure and Lehmann proving to be more than solid this Arsenal side is going to play some fantastic football in the coming seasons.

But Can this young Gunners side go on to win the Summit prize which their elite predecessors have failed to conquer?

Can the Gunners hold the Galacticos

Arsenal at highbury is always a tough proposition and even tougher when they just stunned the Madrid giants at the Bernebeau. But Real Madrid will be back strongly and they will throw everything at the Gunners this time, will the young Arsenal Backline hold up. Can Beckham,Zidane,Ronaldo,Raul,Robinho provide the thrust or will it be Arsene Wenger's special night. Freddie is up and running, Hleb improving with the day, Henry at his imperious best, the faultless Cesc Fabregas, the Dutch Master back I think Arsenal will have a real shout at this one. Jens Lehmann is at the best form of his life........Eboue outsmarting Robinho,Toure rock solid....

Predicition Arsenal 2-1 and the gunners go through.

Indians hold Zesty young Lions to an enthralling draw

Given England's injury list of Ashes stars Michael Vaughan,Ashley Giles,Simon Jones and the personal problems of Marcus Trescothick, few would have expected the match at Nagpur to go the full distance of 5 days. With the Indian spin duo of Anil Kumble and Harbhajan Singh and the pace duo of Irfan Pathan and Sreesanth on top form before the series began, almost everyone had written off the travelling Englishmen. Dare someone could compare a batting line up that boasts the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Virender Sehwag, VVS Laxman against Andrew Straus, Ian Bell, Kevin Pietersen, Alistair Cook. It was David versus Goliath on the cards with England expected to be massacred on a belter of a pitch, What else could you expect when Sachin Tendulkar alone had scored more runs than the entire English team put together.

Day 1
The stage was set and luckily for England stand in skipper Andrew Flintoff won the toss and decided to bat. After a good resistance from Strauss and Cook, the inevitable happened England started losing wickets and were precauriously placed at 244-7 at the end of the day. But the unexpected was Sreesanth the young aggressive lad took the top honours with his fiery bowling and Alistair Cook with his 60 on Debut. It was a tale of debutants on show with each showing his character.

Day 2
The second day was even more pulsating when Colingwood slammed a patient century and helped England to a healthy total of 393. Colingwood who would have not played had Vaughan or Trescothick shown up handled the Indian bowling Masterfully and looked comfortable through out his stay at the middle. It was a very good comeback by England with the Indian team once again failing to clean the tail up and they had a big task on their hands. Despite Sehwag's early dismissal Dravid and Jaffer negotiated the pace and spin thrown at them.

Day 3
The match was evenly poised to many a critic's disbelief when the sensational Mathew Hoggard ripped apart India's top order and the mighty batting line up could muster only a partly 190 runs for the loss of 7 wickets. Enter Mohammad Kaif whose fielding skills preceded the much needed batting ability and a man who has been criticised for being given a place in the test team. The need of the hour was not scintillating stroke play but a gutsy innings. Fight he did along with an able ally in Anil Kumble they surged past 300 with a wonderfull stand of 128 runs. Sure it was not attractive batting but nothing short of sheer grit and poise which frustrated the young English side. The third day ended with honors even with India brilliantly fighting back aided by half centuries from Kaif and Kumble.

Day 4
Everyone expected the Ball to zip and turn on the penultimate day which could help India's cause with the two spin masters waiting to cast their web. It turned out to be a dead pitch with England piling on the runs with the help of some bad decisions and poor fielding. KP in particular was harsh on the Indian bowlers and imposed himself on the game with a rapid fire 87. But the icing on the cake for this young English side was the century of Debutant Alistair Cook. No one expected Cook to do the unexpected when he arrived from the distant shores of the Carribbean. With the pitch not doing much, the English were wondering how much to set this strong Indian batting line up. It was a tough call and the slow pace of Cook and Collingwood did not help either.

Day 5
After all the initial revelations of a thumping Indian win, England now stood with victory in touching distance but lot of work was left to be done. India started the day with 369 runs to win but the British Symphony with Flintoff as its Conductor began in style with Sehwag cleaned up by Hoggard. After the initial burst, it was the wall rising over its counterparts in his genuine style. Jaffer and Dravid batted steadily for 2 sessions and opened up when the hopes of a famous victory in the English camp had vanished. 200 runs from 25 overs, pretty daunting but not impossible with the heavy artillery of the Indian batting line up yet to come. India went after the victory despite the fall of Dravid and Jaffer with Dhoni making some incredible shots. It required Steve Harmison a bowler who had a dismal game to produce a brilliant spell to stop India romping to victory. In the end it finished with India requiring a further 108 runs from 70 balls.

Post Match Comments:
The pendulum had swung both ways through out the course of the match with both the teams failing to finish the opponent off. Many questioned India's defensive tactics in its own backyard but people often forget soon. The same pair of Dravid and Jaffer had steered India to a commanding position at 144-1 only to be reduced to 190-7 just a few days back and its hard on any pitch to face the hostile attack of Flintoff and co. It was a good show of Batsmanship from Dravid and Jaffer when needed and they cannot be held at fault for the shoddy fielding and collapse of the mighty Indian middle order on days 3 and 4. With the game moving onto Mohali, India would have by now understood that this English side is no pushover but they still hold the upper hand after scraping through a dead Nagpur pitch. Can the English use Mohali's grass to their advantage and force a result or will it be the Titans to turn it on? Flintoff definetely needs to be applauded at the way he has handled his resources and Dravid for his salvaging effort.
